Exodus 20:7 – “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.”

As Christians, we are well aware of the commandment “you shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.” But, on occasion, it is the first thing that comes out of our mouth when we are upset or angry. Many of us immediately ask for forgiveness afterward and try to never repeat it again. Those of us who have managed to kick the habit and decide to honor the LORD understand it is not easy to do.

Those who are new to Christianity usually find it difficult to stop using the LORD’s name in vain. But, with practice and in time you are finally able to achieve the goal of honoring the LORD.

Imagine if the LORD can talk to us every time we use his name in vain. What would he say? Chances are he would tell us, “if you must curse use your own name.”

Let’s think about it for a moment. Can you imagine if we walked around cursing our own name? How would that make us feel? We would feel upset and outraged that our name was being used to express anger or disgust, right? Now, let’s take it a step further. Let’s imagine you have children that start cursing your name whenever they get upset. How does this make you feel? Whatever your answer is, that’s exactly how we are making the LORD feel.

It is up to us to set a good example as Christians. If we don’t follow the commandments properly how can we expect others to follow our lead? Remember, non-believers are watching us all the time. When we present ourselves in a righteous manner, it encourages others to behave the same. Following the commandments is essential in our lives and influential to onlookers.

Remember the world is in turmoil. There are natural disasters, wars, protesting, earthquakes, fires and political issues worldwide. It’s times like these that people are looking for something good to believe in. It’s our chance as Christians to help bring grace and peace to others lives. People are already on their knees from being so upset and distraught, it’s best for us to help them by setting a good example, not using the LORD’s name in vain and encouraging them to find faith.

Wilson Alvarez, a lover of Jesus Christ had an early experience where he had a vision of the Risen Lord & instantaneously became a believer at the prime age of 3. Through out his young life, he always felt protection and blessings and even though was not walking with the Lord, always acknowledged his blessings. It was when he turned 30, that he became a follower and prayed based on John 3:3 – “In order to enter the Kingdom of God, you must be born again.” Mr. Alvarez enjoys Men’s ministries and is active in the prison ministry movement where he gives weekly leadership and christian talks.
