King David, Bears, and Lions, a story by Wilson Alvarez

In the quiet pastures of ancient Israel, young David tended to his father’s sheep. His days were filled with the simple but demanding tasks of a shepherd: guiding his flock to green pastures, finding clear streams for them to drink, and protecting them from the dangers of the wild. It was a life that required vigilance, courage, and a deep trust in God.

One day, while David was watching over his flock, a lion emerged from the brush. Its eyes were fixed on one of the lambs. Without hesitation, David sprang into action. Drawing from his experience and his faith, he chased the lion, struck it, and rescued the lamb from its jaws. The lion turned on him, but David seized it by its hair and killed it. The young shepherd knew that his strength came not from his own might, but from the Lord who protected him.

Not long after, a bear appeared, equally menacing and determined to take a sheep. Again, David stood his ground. He confronted the bear, striking it down and saving his flock. Each time, he felt the presence of God guiding his hand and giving him the courage to face these fearsome predators.

Years later, this same David would stand before King Saul, volunteering to face the giant Goliath. When questioned about his ability to fight such a formidable enemy, David recounted his encounters with the lion and the bear. “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it, and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine” (1 Samuel 17:34-37 NIV).

David’s confidence was rooted in his past experiences and his unwavering faith in God. Just as he had protected his sheep from the lion and the bear, he believed that God would enable him to defeat Goliath. His courage was not born of arrogance but of a profound trust in the divine protection he had always known.

Modern Parallel: The Protector in the City

In today’s world, the story of David resonates deeply, especially with those who take on roles of protectors and leaders in their communities. One such modern-day guardian is Officer Moira Smith of the New York City Police Department, whose bravery on September 11, 2001, exemplifies the courage and faith needed to face dire threats.

Moira Smith: The Modern-Day David

Officer Moira Smith was on duty when the first plane hit the World Trade Center. Without hesitation, she rushed to the scene, guiding people to safety amid the chaos. Her calm and determined demeanor provided much-needed assurance to those fleeing the towers. Despite the danger, she repeatedly returned to the building, determined to save as many lives as possible.

As the situation grew increasingly perilous, Officer Smith’s actions mirrored the courage of David when he faced the lion and the bear. She could have stayed back, but her sense of duty and her commitment to protecting others drove her forward. Witnesses recalled how she directed them out of harm’s way, always going back to help more people.

In her final moments, Officer Smith was seen urging people to keep moving, to stay calm, and to believe they would get out safely. Her ultimate sacrifice was a testament to her bravery and selflessness. Like David, who trusted in God’s protection while facing formidable beasts, Moira Smith trusted in her mission and her ability to make a difference, even in the face of overwhelming danger.

The Lesson

David’s story teaches us about the power of faith and the importance of facing challenges head-on. It shows us that the experiences we gain and the trust we place in a higher power can prepare us for even greater battles. Whether in ancient times or today, the spirit of courage and protection remains timeless.

Officer Moira Smith’s actions on that fateful day are a poignant reminder of what it means to be a protector. Her story, like David’s, is one of bravery, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to safeguarding others. As we navigate our own lives, facing our personal lions and bears, may we draw inspiration from both David’s example and the heroic deeds of people like Officer Smith. With faith and determination, we too can overcome any obstacle.
