There is a long-running joke that men secretly listen to sports games during church. Another common joke, which is actually a reality for some, is that men and women skip church on Sunday’s to watch their favorite sports team live on television.

This is surprising to learn in the age of DVR’s and TiVo’s. But some people report it’s best to watch it live so nobody can ruin the game by telling you the score or who won. Many churches have realized that their attendance goes down during football season. For this reason, they decided to add a service that is prior to the game.

This means the church service is specifically timed for everyone to attend on Sunday’s before the game. Some churches have even calculated traffic and distance into the equation.

How blessed are sports fans to have a church that accommodates game times, right? In the past, this would have never been considered. But, in today’s world, the importance of attending church is essential to a well-balanced life.

Now that you know you can wake up Sunday morning, attend church and drive home in time to see a football game, it should help make your schedule more balanced.

Sports fans, including some preachers, have even started Sunday football game viewing groups after church. This encourages fans to attend the service and then head over to a designated room located in the church to watch the game with other members of the congregation.

Some church groups even bring snacks along to enjoy the game. What sounds better than enjoying a game with your fellow congregation members? You already have church in common and now football. It’s an excellent way for you to enjoy the best of both worlds.

A common theme that is running through game day at the church is prayer. The sports group creates a new prayer for their favorite team every week. They take turns creating a prayer which helps the group bond in prayer as well as sports.

If you are a sports fan that has stopped going to church just to see your favorite team play, you can make a change. First, ask some of the football fans in your congregation if they would like to form a game watching group after Sunday service. Then, determine where it will be located and ask everyone to bring some snacks to enjoy. As the leader of the group, you should lead begin the meeting in prayer
