Why do we sin? I’m sure this a question we’ve all asked ourselves, or others, at one point or another. Moreover, why can’t we stop sinning especially if we know that it is wrong?

In the book of Romans, Paul, the apostle, also shares his own frustrations saying, “For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do” (Romans 7:15).

To answer everyone’s question, the reason why we sin is that our spirits may be strong but our flesh is weak and it is our flesh that gives birth to this sin. It’s a part of our humanity and although we cannot stop sinning completely, the bible does teach us ways on how we can properly repent as Christians.

  1. Acknowledge that God is superior to us

The first thing we need to out in our heads is that Christ is above all because how can we seek his forgiveness if we don’t believe in His capacities to save us from sin?

  1. Recognize your faults and guilt

We cannot be forgiven of our sins if we first do not acknowledge our sins and feel guilty for having done them. Recognizing our faults and truly feeling remorse for having done them is an important part of being repentant.

  1. Live by Christ’s word

It is one thing to ask for forgiveness but it is another thing to repent or make a change, after acknowledging and seeking forgiveness for our wrong ways. Read the bible, seek guidance from our elders and be a better Christian- seek for change and apply it in your life.

  1. Repent to God for our sins

It is not enough to just say, “Lord, forgive me for my sins” and expect to have a clean slate. Yes, we will sin again although they may not be the exact same sins but, we cannot be forgiven for our wrongdoings each time if we do not really have a repentant attitude and a repentant heart.

  1. Practice faith and repentance always

We will continue to sin, that is a fact, but if we try our best to avoid sin, Christ will see this sincerity in our hearts. Faith, repentance and constant trying to change for the better is something we should practice every day of our lives.

Are we ready to repent?

Wilson Alvarez, a lover of Jesus Christ had an early experience where he had a vision of the Risen Lord & instantaneously became a believer at the prime age of 3. Through out his young life, he always felt protection and blessings and even though was not walking with the Lord, always acknowledged his blessings. It was when he turned 30, that he became a follower and prayed based on John 3:3 – “In order to enter the Kingdom of God, you must be born again.” Mr. Alvarez enjoys Men’s ministries and is active in the prison ministry movement where he gives weekly leadership and christian talks.
